When searching for a dance style that suits Karen’s addiction of “freedom to express”, she picked up contemporary dance, salsa and hip hop. The latter appealed to her the most and she started extensive training in freestyle hip hop. In 2001, she went on to form a competitive all-girls hip hop team “Da street Soulz” and clinched several titles which started the group on performances.
Karen continued to search her dance identity and when she chanced upon pole dancing, impressed by how fitness is married with dance form, she was certain she found her new calling, and decided to pursue it more seriously. She spends much time these days in practicing new pole techniques, attends workshops by International Pole ad Aerial teachers like Suzie Q & V Lea and performs pole dance fitness regularly in events to hone her pole skills. All her efforts seem to be paying off handsomely as Karen is Singapore’s Overall Champion in the 1st SG Polestar championship, and went on to be Singapore’s representative in the World Pole Dance Championship held in Tokyo in Dec 2010.
To further expand her aerial skills, Karen attained her Pole Fitness Instructor Certification and continues to attend up to 4/5 days a week of pole training, gymnastics and aerial silk and aerial hoop. Karen seems to enjoy these new challenges, and believes in pushing herself mentally and physically.
